MUNCIE -- Chances of development at the community's primary gateway to Interstate 69 got a boost Monday with the approval of a new, larger tax district that would funnel revenue to new streets and sewers. The Delaware County Redevelopment Commission unanimously approved the creation of the I-69 Allocation Area, a tax increment financing (TIF) district that will help fund improvements around the Ind. 332 exit on the interstate west of Muncie. Some other local TIF districts have millions of dollars of revenue to help pay for road, sidewalk and utility improvements. The money for those improvements comes from property taxes on new development in the area. The resulting improvements can prompt even more development, officials believe. http://www.thestarpress.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20080701/BUSINESS/807010327/1046

INDIANAPOLIS - With gasoline prices averaging $4.11 a gallon and the Fourth of July just days away, Democratic gubernatorial hopeful Jill Long Thompson urged Gov. Mitch Daniels on Tuesday to suspend the state sales tax on gas until Labor Day. The move would save someone with a weekly $50 fill-up about $3.50 a week, she estimated, or $28 over two months. But the cost to the state's general fund in lost sales tax revenue would be much higher - $122 million for a 60-day suspension. http://www.journalgazette.net/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20080702/NEWS07/807020360
