AVENUE'S IDENTITY PROBLEM PROMPTS SAFETY CONCERNS
The Shelbyville News
Ron Hamilton
7/9/08

Morris Avenue, located on the far east side of Shelbyville, has an identity problem, and there are concerns it could lead to traffic accidents. "Motorists coming into town from the Old Rushville Road and the German Road drive way too fast after they cross the interstate overpass," said Don Gobel, who lives in the area across the road from the new city-county park. "Many people think it's a county road, but it's actually a city avenue, a busy city avenue." Morris Avenue was an early paved thoroughfare and most likely named after one of the county's pioneers and leading political organizers, Dr. Sylvan B. Morris. According to city officials and the latest city plat maps, the avenue begins at North Vine Street on the east side of the Walkerville Bridge and goes all the way east, past the Knightstown Road intersection, to the west side of the Interstate 74 overpass. http://www.shelbynews.com/main.asp?SectionID=1&SubSectionID=93&ArticleID=56425&TM=83120.41

DAISY LANE PROJECT SLOWED

Tom Schellenberg - project manager for the Daisy Lane project - still believes phase two improvements for the street can be finished by the end of November. Work has been delayed during the first three weeks of construction because of problems with utility upgrades, Schellenberg said. "(Utility work) was all going to start at the same time, but it didn't work out that way," Schellenberg said. "I still hope we can get done before Thanksgiving - that's the (desired) completion date." The street is closed beginning at the Green Valley Road intersection west to State Street. Schellenberg said crews have finished constructing an access road for Holy Family Catholic Church and Holy Family School. Right-of-way purchases are under way for phase three of the project, according to Schellenberg. The next phase will include replacing the bridge over Falling Run Creek, just west of Zurschmeide Drive. Phase four of construction will include street-widening west of Graybrook Drive to Grant Line Road. http://www.news-tribune.net/floydcounty/local_story_191105506.html?keyword=secondarystory
