Evansville Courier & Press

Officials are warning motorists that a major highway improvement project along
U.S. 60 West in Henderson could create traffic delays when it begins next week.
The project, which begins Tuesday and will last until June 2009, will involve
crews working from the U.S. 41-A South Y area to the Kentucky 425 Henderson
Bypass. The 1.88-mile long project will convert the current two-lane highway
into a four-lane roadway with a center turn lane, a bicycle lane, sidewalks,
curb abd gutter. The goal of the work is to greatly improve truck and employee
access to the Henderson Industrial Area along U.S. 60 West as well as the flow
of through traffic. http://www.courierpress.com/news/2007/nov/29/major-us-60-project-starts-next-week/

The Jake and Travis Arms of Life campaign has raised $620,000, enough to proceed with plans for most of the railroad crossing improvements that the Greenwood-based fundraising effort has targeted. Jake Findley, 12, and his brother Travis, 9, were killed Feb. 3 when the sport utility vehicle in which they were riding was struck by a train at a crossing on Stones Crossing Road. The tragedy led to a communitywide effort to raise money for improvements at crossings in Johnson County. Work could begin as early as March with installation of flashing lights and cross arms at the Stones Crossing Road railroad site, said Heidi Sichting, executive director of the Center Grove Education Foundation, which is involved in the fundraising campaign. http://www.indystar.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20071129/LOCAL/711290346/1006/LOCAL

State funding will help the town of Newburgh build better, safer sidewalks around Newburgh Elementary School. The $250,000 Safe Routes to School (SRTS) grant was announced last week. About half of all school children walked to school 40 years ago, according to statistics from the U.S. Department of Transportation. But today, that number is less than 15 percent. The cost of the entire sidewalk project envisioned by Newburgh would cost about $1.2 million. With $50,000 already set aside in both the 2007 and 2008 budgets, the town will have $350,000 to spend next year. http://www.tristate-media.com/articles/2007/11/29/warricknews/news/01traffic.txt
